TOPICS!!! A NEW SPECIES
(18) Paph. hangianum
Yet again, a new species was discovered from Viet Nam and recorded. This new species is Paph. hangianum was discovered in the province Bac Thai, 800~1000 m sine loco and recorded by Dr. Holger perner and Mr. Olaf Gruss in Die Orchidee, the magazine in Germany.
Paph. hangianum
@As we can see in the photo, this new species is similar to Paph. emersonii. Lip globes and inflated with involute margins. Petals very large and rounded, finely punctuated at the base, staminode rhombic with red venation. Flower yellowish-green, with an intensive sweet odor. It has affinities to the horticultular Paph. mem Larry Heuer ( emersonii x malipoense ) , but the following characters are distinct in the new species. It has a ver large synosym, oval rounded petals, a very long villous pubescence at the base of the petals, a different shape and clouration of the staminode, a lip with nearly no translucent spots, nearly no visible marbling on the dark green upside and unspotted pale green underside of leaves. Habitus terrestrial herb, 23~35 cm wide from leaf tip to leaf tip. The leaves 12~25 cm long and 3~4.6 cm wide.
@According to the information from Viet Nam, the new plant grows in close proximity to Paph. emersonii and Paph. vietnamense. Paph. malipoense or any of its varieties were not found at the locality. It can not be excluded that new species is natural hybrid of Paph. emersonii to which it has great similarities in the leaves, and Paph. vietnamense or Paph. malipoense . But this is not supported by the leaves , which are totally lacking any red pigmentation on underside and have no clearly visible marbling on the dark green shiny upside.
The staminode of Paph. hangianum. It is very different from one of Paph. emersonii.
The flower and plants of Paph. hangianum. The inflorescence upright to slightly arching, 15~23 cm long and 4~5 mm in diameter.
