Q:Dear Dr. Tanaka,

Hello, I'm Liza from Sabah (North Borneo) Malaysia, I have recently become interested in growing Paphs. I bought my first (and my only one for now) at a market and I think it is a local specie. However, I did not find it in the book "Slipper Orchids of Borneo" by Phillip Cribbs. But I did see a picture of it in another book on gardening in the tropics, it was labeled as Paph. tonsum, which is found in Sumatra and North Borneo. Can you tell me more about this specie and are the leaves mottled? I am now keeping it in my room where it
receives a little light in the afternoon. It has one bloom now which has been there for two weeks now.I do hope to hear from you soon. Thank you very much.
Yours truly,
Liza Mahjhrin

A:Dear Liza,
How are you doing ? All right, I understood your question.
1) Paph. tonsum is not located in Borneo Island.
It locates in Java and Sumatra Islands only. In the northest area of Sumatra, one variety of Paph. tonsum, Paph. braemii that is smaller than usual tonsum is distributed. And Paph. tonsum has other variety of cupreum whose leaves and color of flower is darker with purple red.
2) The leave of Paph. tonsum is mottled. But so many Paph.'s species have mottled leaf. You can not identify from the leaves, I guess.
3) As you live in the best condition in nature of Borneo for growing Paph., you had better grow it outside. But never keep it under the sun light directly. Under trees, you may hung in the shade. You had better keep the shade from 60 to 70 %. In nature, they will grow east or north east side of mountains. It means, they like the morning sunshine but doesn't like in day time. In detail, you read how to grow Paph. on my site. English page is available. But you have to modify slightly from the procedures that I recommended.
4) If you could send the photo of your Paph., please send it by e mail attached or by air mail. It is the best way to identify what it is. The following Photos are Paph. tonsum and Paph. braemii. Is it the same as yours ?

Paph. tonsum

Paph. braemii

In the north area of Borneo, there are several kinds of Subgenus of Paph. ,Spasopetalum like amabile, bullenianum etc. The leaves will be similar each other. I'm looking forward to getting your reply. Thank you.

With my best regards.

Toshi

Q: Dear Toshi,
I just discovered that the plant I have is not Paph. tonsum. In fact it is Paph. appletonianum from Thailand. Can you please post a picture of it? I haven't developed the film but the picture of the flower will be small because I don't have the right lens.
A: Dear Liza,
OK, Liza, I'll put the photo as follows.
But also we have another problems about Subgenus of Spasopetalum concluding Paph. appletonianum. On the other hand, there is only one species . Paph. tortipetalum in Java Island. Paph. appletonianumis located in Thailand as you mentioned. But around you, many kinds of them are distributed like Paph. amabile, linii etc. We can not identified except having the identification of your plant's collected location and the flower. If possible, can you hear from the market about the information where it came from in truth. Is it come from around you, near Kuchin, around Mt. Kinabaru, Malaya Peninsula, in the mid land of Thailand or in the mountains in Thailand ( the north area) etc.

Paph. appletonianum

Paph. bullenianum

Paph. amabile
